SLaM Staff Guide to Online Library Resources - Introduction

Welcome to the SLaM staff guide to online library resources using the NHS search engine and databases.

These web pages are designed to teach SLaM staff how to get the most from the online journal collections bought by the NHS and by SLaM. Most of these are applicable to the NHS as a whole; the guides to the journals that SLaM have bought are accurate but lack passwords. The guides are designed as tools to help you perform 'Good-enough' searches, download the reference list you generate and then find the articles the list refers to. We also have a "how to set up alerts" section; alerts are a fantastic tool for CPD and the KSF.

These databases and journals typically need passwords (exceptions are Pubmed, SCIE and Highwire). Most of these will need an NHS Athens username and password; self-register at www.athens.nhs.uk from an NHS computer. Others need passwords that SLaM has bought — to get these either e-mail me paul.harrington@slam.nhs.uk from your @slam.nhs.uk e-mail address or look on the SLaM library intranet page http://sites.intranet.slam.nhs.uk/library/default.aspx

If you are NHS staff and want help with an important literature search ask your local health librarian. There is a list here http://www.hlisd.org/.

This is the trial version of the website: please could you contact paul.harrington@slam.nhs.uk with any comments. Thanks for your help.
